CULTURE NEWS

  • ACCGov, ADDA, and Morton Theatre invite professional artists to submit proposals for a mural in the lobby that will celebrate the theatre's role in Athens and Northeast Georgia. The completed proposal must be received by Friday, Feb. 27 at 5:00 p.m.  Athens-Clarke County
  • Today, as the community honors MLK Jr with National Day of Service volunteerism, a study finds Georgia ranks among the top ten for racial progress by closing the income gap by 32 percentage points — showing marked progress in employment and wealth.  WUGA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The USG Board of Regents approved demolition of Legion Pool at UGA on Tuesday, Jan. 13 and requested Gov. Kemp authorize redevelopment of the site into a community green space with an outdoor amphitheater and improved student engagement — the project is set to finish in fall.  The Red & Black

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jersey Mike's in Athens scored 80 in a health inspection conducted by the Georgia Department of Health from Jan. 7 to Jan. 16, 2026. The report noted mold on a Pepsi dispenser (self-service station) and dust on ceiling vents, though corrections were made.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Orangetheory Fitness in Athens is offering a promotional membership for $2 per day through Jan. 31 to help community members meet their health goals with expert coaching and science-backed workouts.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The University of Georgia’s College of Public Health was awarded a $245,000 grant for a study on e-bike safety that will review crash reports from the Athens-Clarke and UGA Police Departments — the study aims to improve data collection and promote safe usage of these popular bikes.  Athens Banner-Herald
