- ➤ Athens will celebrate MLK Day on Monday, Jan. 19 with a free parade hosted by the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement along Hull and Washington Streets from noon to 3 p.m. and a Day of Service starting at 8:30 a.m. at Lay Park Gymnasium — sign up to volunteer. The Red & Black
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ The Georgia Lottery’s $5 Georgia Bulldogs scratcher, launched Aug. 19, sold 3,151,110 tickets and raised about $15.76 million through November, with September yielding the most sales. UGA extended its long-term partnership with an initial payment of $703K + future amounts increasing to $806K and $831K, the lottery said. Athens Banner-Herald

- ➤ Oscar nominee Michael Shannon and musician Jason Narducy will perform R.E.M.’s Life’s Rich Pageant in sequence and extra tracks at the 40 Watt Club on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27; their return follows a guest show with original R.E.M. members last February (tickets for these dates are sold out). - ➤ Clarke County Board of Education is asking families, staff, students & local residents to complete a six-question survey for input on selecting a new superintendent by Saturday, Jan. 31, with applications accepted until Sunday, Feb. 1. - ➤ Athens-Clarke County’s 911 Center now uses IPAWS — a FEMA system for verified emergency alerts — to send messages to cell phones, radios and TVs, while UGA maintains its own system for campus emergencies. WUGA

- ➤ Kaiser Permanente reached a $46 million settlement over a data privacy case + Georgia members who used its app from Nov. 2017 to May 2024 can file a claim for $20 to $40 before March 12. Athens Banner-Herald
