CULTURE NEWS

  • Indie band Dhemo (featuring Annie Leeth and Little Mae) will perform at Ciné on Saturday, Jan. 10 with doors opening at 8 p.m. and the show starting at 9 p.m.; tickets cost $10.  Flagpole
  • Athens-based band Workhorses of the Entertainment/Recreational Industry, made up of veteran musicians, will perform alongside Scott Low & the Blue Bouillon at The Foundry on Friday, Jan. 9 with doors at 6 p.m. and the show at 7:30 p.m., while tickets cost $10 (with UGA ID) or $15.  Flagpole

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Georgia said on Dec. 26 that it will demolish Legion Pool — a rarely used 90-year-old facility that costs millions to repair — as critics gather over 2,000 signatures to preserve the historic site.  Flagpole

HEALTH NEWS

  • Georgians must enroll by Jan. 15 for Affordable Care Act coverage starting in February as premiums have surged after a subsidy dispute caused some to drop their insurance (Athens residents should review their options soon).  FOX 5 Atlanta

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Namak Restaurant opened on the westside at 1155 Mitchell Bridge Rd in the former International Grill & Bar space and held its soft opening on Dec. 26. The restaurant offers traditional Pakistani cuisine featuring meat-centric dishes after debuting in Alpharetta in January 2024.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • Georgia Square Mall redevelopment is stalled as The Leaven Group lacks a viable financing path; ACC officials will consider an overlay zoning district allowing public input to guide future development. The project, planned to offer affordable housing & greenspace, may be sold to another developer.  Flagpole

SPORTS NEWS

  • North Oconee wide receiver Dallas Dickerson decommitted from Kentucky football after being released from his letter of intent and has reopened his recruitment. He confirmed his decision by text — and on Instagram after graduating last December and helping lead his school to its first state title.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Samford defensive back Brody Tolbert, a Prince Avenue alum, announced his transfer to Georgia on Tuesday, Jan. 6, under head coach Kirby Smart. The sophomore plans to continue his career as a Bulldog after one season with Samford.  Athens Banner-Herald
