- ➤ Athens welcomed its New Year’s babies on Jan. 1 when Georgia Barber was born at St. Mary’s Hospital at 2:27 p.m. and Zahkari Hardy arrived at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center at 12:41 a.m. The newborns brought joy to their families. Athens Banner-Herald
- ➤ The Walk for Peace marched through Bishop and Watkinsville Saturday as part of its 2,300-mile trek from Good Hope toward Washington, D.C. The Buddhist monks stopped for lunch at the Bishop Community Center and reached Watkinsville at about 2:30 p.m. Athens Banner-Herald

- ➤ UGA professor Amy K. Winter’s study on rubella revealed its vaccine could prevent many birth defects — her research led the World Health Organization to update its global vaccine recommendation. WUGA

- ➤ Georgia basketball's Jeremiah Wilkinson redeemed an earlier lapse by scoring 7 overtime points to secure a 104-100 win against Auburn Saturday. His teammates backed him after a critical foul in regulation, and coach Mike White praised the team's resilience in a game of tense plays. Athens Banner-Herald
- ➤ Georgia football is making staff and player changes as the transfer portal stays open until Jan. 16. David Hill will join Colorado State as running backs coach while defensive assistant David Metcalf moves to Western Kentucky, and players including Kris Jones, Jordan Thomas and Roderick Robinson are entering the portal. - ➤ Georgia football defensive lineman Christen Miller declared for the NFL Draft on Saturday, Jan. 3, after the Bulldogs were eliminated from the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal against Ole Miss.
