First Sundays in the Shoal Creek Sanctuary Volunteer Workday

About this event

Looking for a meaningful way to support local conservation? Join the Shoal Creek Sanctuary team for a volunteer workday and help restore native habitat on this 274-acre property in Athens protected by a conservation easement with the Oconee River Land Trust.

Volunteer projects change with the seasons but may include:

• Removing invasive plant species by hand or with tools

• Planting native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers

• Building or raising protective fencing around young native plants

• Tagging and protecting sensitive native species

• Supporting other habitat restoration projects that improve biodiversity

Shoal Creek Sanctuary serves as a living model for conservation, research, and land stewardship. The property is managed without pesticides to help protect pollinators and other wildlife. Community volunteers play an important role in restoring native habitats by removing invasive plants such as Chinese privet, Japanese stiltgrass, and autumn olive, while helping establish native species including swamp milkweed, river oats, redbuds, and many others.

Volunteer days are typically held on the first Sunday of each month , with additional workdays scheduled throughout the year as needed. Every workday is different, reflecting the needs of the landscape and the changing seasons.

• Parking is available along the road near the mailbox at 275 Blue Heron Dr, Athens, GA 30605. Carpooling is encouraged. Families, children, and well-behaved dogs are welcome.
